Darren is Married to Lisa, with 2 daughters. He is a Primary School Teacher and passionate Carlton Supporter.
He has been involved with the Wantirna South Football Club for over 10 years with his initial involvement being dragged down to play some Reserves games by Mark Lowe in 2007 (resulting in a fractured eye socket and a torn hamstring!!) and then being part of the inaugural Veterans team in 2009. He retired from vets footy at the end of this last season (2017) having Co-captained the team, winning a Best & Fairest and twice winning the goal kicking (although once was with only 5 goals 🙂 ).
In 2017 he also took on the role of Stats man for the Senior team providing a range of stats on game days to assist the coaching staff with an understanding of our strengths and weaknesses on any given day.
He has spent many years in church, school and community settings volunteering and helping people and particularly enjoys catching up over coffee, a beer or McDonalds Frappes in one on one, or small group settings and sharing and listening to people’s life journeys.
Having a Player Welfare Officer will give those who have some involvement with the club a person to speak to should they need guidance, advice, or just someone to talk to about life and also work with the committee and coaching staff in shaping club culture.
“I see my role as Player Welfare Officer for the club is to make myself available for anyone directly or indirectly associated with our club should someone have the need to just sit over a beer, a coffee or cake and talk with someone who cares to listen – someone who can coach them, listen to them, care for them, challenge them or just do life together in an informal setting. I’m sure I will be different things for different people, but ultimately it is my intention to be a confidential confidant prepared to assist with a listening ear to share pressures and concerns faced from footy, family, work and other life circumstances.
In 2018, he continued as Stats man and is also branched into some junior coaching as an assistant coach with Stoney in the U17’s. Season 2019 will see Darren increase his role as he spends more time assisting with all the coaches on game day and at training.
Players, coaches and people associated with the club can contact Darren by email (email@example.com) or give him a call on 0403 149 232 (Make sure you leave a message if he is teaching during the day!!)
