The Wantirna South Football Club is announcing that 2017 will be Matthew Clark’s final year as Senior coach. The football department and Matt entered the season knowing that regardless of results, it would be his 7th and final year. Something we both agreed was in the best interest of the club. At the mid-season review, Matt and the club decided that now would be the appropriate time to announce this, to give the club ample time to find his replacement for 2018 and beyond. Matt will coach out the remainder of the season with the full support of club and players.
Matthew’s contribution to the club has been nothing short of outstanding; 4 seasons as a Senior key position player including the Vice Captain role; 7 seasons as Senior assistant coach & a further 7 years as Senior coach and recently named a life member of the Devils. Matt is the longest serving Senior coach at the Devils.
When Matt took over as Senior coach in 2011, the club was in a tough rebuilding stage and had been removed off Walker reserve while it was being resurfaced. Focusing on developing our local young players and with some smart recruiting, Matthew galvanised the group and had us quickly ascending up the ladder. In 2013 he led the club to the EFL 3rd Div Grand Final. In 2014, he went one better and coached the Senior team to the EFL 3rd Div Premiership. Two years later in Division 2, Matt coached the Senior team to another Grand Final in 2016 before losing to premiers Bayswater. This is a brilliant coaching achievement.
Matt was also awarded Senior coach of the year for the Eastern region in 2013, and was named Senior Coach of the Team of the year in EFL 3rd Div of 2014.
Although Matt’s coaching resume is fantastic, it’s his relationships with players and supporters that he should be most proud of. He has been the perfect face & voice of our club as a role model and leader of our young men. The club is in a much better place because of Matthew’s involvement & contribution.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Matthew and his wife Tina and family for their time and commitment over 18 years at the club. Hopefully we will see Matt stay involved at the club in some way.
The club recognises Matt Clark’s enormous contribution to football & culture at the Devils & the EFL and is extremely grateful for the journey we have been on.
